Every dystopian story has the character who makes you lean closer.

Not necessarily the loudest person in the room. Not the first to announce a rebellion. Sometimes it’s the person who listens carefully, chooses every word, and seems to understand much more than he’s willing to say.

In Dominion: Ascension, that person is Colin Cordova.

Playing by the rules—or reading between them?
Colin understands Dominion’s structure. He knows how to navigate its expectations and preserve his dignity within a world that limits his choices. His intelligence and warmth make him an important confidant for Dani, but his position inside the system also raises an intriguing question: how much can you tell about someone from the role they appear to accept?

It’s easy to recognize resistance when someone openly refuses an order. It becomes more complicated when survival requires cooperation.

Does following the rules mean believing in them? Does staying inside a system mean supporting it? Or can understanding its machinery become a form of power?

Colin invites us to sit with those questions rather than rush toward an answer.

Why Colin deserves a closer look
Dani’s curiosity pushes her to question the world around her. Colin offers a different perspective: the experience of someone who has learned to read that world carefully. He is emotionally nuanced, observant, and more than the classification Dominion has given him.

That contrast creates an interesting lens for readers. Dani may ask the question everyone else avoids. Colin may understand why they avoid it.

Neither perspective is simple. Together, they invite us to consider the difference between being silent and having nothing to say.

Your book club’s next debate
Here’s a question to bring to your next meeting:

Would you trust someone who knows exactly how an unjust system works—or would that knowledge make you more cautious?

And a second question, just to complicate things:

What would that person have to risk before you believed they were on your side?

Meet Colin in Dominion: Ascension, and decide for yourself how much you trust the man who knows the rules.

Read the book, then tell me: would Colin earn your confidence?
